Imagine how it felt discovering three ancient Greek mosaics which date back 2,220 years ago. In 2014, Professor Kutalmış Görkay of Ankara University along with his team of archeologists unearthed three ancient Greek mosaics in Turkey, in the city of Zeugma close to the border of Syria.
Back in 2007, people in Zeugma were expecting a flood because of constructions of a dam. Worried that the flood would make the ancient treasures of Zeugma disappear, the archeologist team immediately started their expeditions.
As they were searching for ancient treasures, they found three ancient Greek mosaics belonging to the 2nd century BC. Surprisingly, the mosaics were found in almost pristine condition. Even though the Zeugma city is now 80% underwater, the team hasn't quit their searches hoping to unveil more hidden artifacts.
Here are some of the amazing artifacts discovered.
Above is a mosaic of the Nine Muses: Clio, Euterpe, Thalia, Melpomene, Terpsichore, Erato, Polymnia, Ourania, and Calliope. During the Renaissance days, the Nine Muses inspired artists as they were the first ones to participate in many art forms. Countless artists did artworks on the Nine Muses as a sign of dedication and recognition of their significance.
Above you can see Oceanus, the divine personification of the sea, and his sister, Tethys, the embodiment of the waters of the world.
As stated by Professor Görkay, back in the second century BC, lots of houses had mosaics in them. Mosaics in houses held a kind of a social aspect. Guests often would admire the artworks while drinking and discussing with the homeowners. There were also different topics from different rooms. For instance, a bedroom might have had a mosaic that portrayed lovers like Eros and Telete.
Above there is Thalia, the muse of comedy and idyllic poetry, in a beautifully intact mosaic.
Experts commented on Thalia’s face discussing how the mosaic required special glass pieces which are used specifically for this mosaic’s face only. Thalia's mosaic is vivid and aesthetically pleasing. An amazing piece of art found by the archeologists.
In the mosaic above, a famous Greek God, Poseidon, God of the sea.
Some history about the city of Zeugma
In the early BCs, the city was significant because of its location. It was geographically located on the borders of the Greco-Roman world and the Persian Empire, so it was used as a bridge which everyone had to cross.
Later, as the Roman Empire began to decline, so did Zeugma. When the city finally fell in AD 253 when Sassanids from Persia attacked it, people had already forgotten about it, until the recent expeditions that uncovered the buried treasures.
