Eratosthenes (276 - 194 BC) was an ancient Greek mathematician, geographer, astronomer, and poet. He was born in Cyrene (present-day Libya) and lived, studied, and died in Alexandria, which was then Egypt's capital city.
At his forties, he was appointed chief librarian of the Library of Alexandria, and it was then when he conducted his most important experiment for which his famous: he calculated the circumference of the Earth with a stick and some geometry!
Eratosthenes of Cyrene managed to calculate the periphery of the Earth with remarkable accuracy, using just his mind and a stick! His experiment was brilliant but at the same time so simple that everyone can do.
