These beautiful photos of the ice-covered lighthouses at the St. Joseph North Pier, which is on the coast of Lake Michigan, may make you feel colder only by looking at them. The lighthouses in these images taken by photographers Thomas Zakowski and Tom Gill are so frozen over that they look like incredible icy fairy-tale towers out of “The Chronicles of Narnia.”
The two lighthouses, built more than 100 years ago, freeze over when the winter winds and waves on Lake Michigan cover the towers in a special icy spray. The shorter outer tower, built in 1906, stands 35 ft tall (10.5m). The second inner tower, which was constructed in 1907, is 57 ft (17.4) tall. The two towers are linked by a catwalk which, when covered in ice and rime, makes for an awe-inspiring sight. The exposed position of the lighthouses makes them a famous destination for sightseers looking for mind-blowing icicles or crashing waves on the shores of Lake Michigan.
Lake Michigan is one among the five North-American Great Lakes and is the only one situated entirely inside the US. The great lakes are so enormous that they generate weather patterns for the surrounding region.
