Around the world, on seven different continents, people marched in solidarity with American women to protest President Donald Trump’s sexism, racism and xenophobia.
The Women's March was initially centered around Washington, however it soon became a record-breaking worldwide protest to promote gender equality, LGBTQ rights and to address racial inequities.
Facebook and Twitter exploded with photos of pre-march poster parties. There were even reports that stores had sold out of poster board in Washington and other cities.
The Women’s March initially centered around Washington DC but evolved into a total of 576 protests around the globe. 408 marches took place in the U.S., and 168 in other countries. (source) Those who demonstrated did so to send a powerful message: that women’s rights matter and that activists are ready to work as hard as necessary to ensure equality for all.
The Women’s March official website reads:
“The Women’s March on Washington will send a bold message to our new government on their first day in office, and to the world that women’s rights are human rights.”
