It's a great victory for animal lovers around the globe, as dog meat has just been temporarily banned from the notorious Yulin Festival in China. That festival has already taken the lives of countless innocent dogs. The ban will come into effect on June 15, one week before the beginning of the festival. It will forbid the sale of canine meat at restaurants, markets, as well as street vendors. Anyone who doesn’t obey will face a fine of up to 100,000 yuan (approximately $15,000) and will be arrested.
Contrary what most people would think, the festival is not some old tradition. It started in 2010 as a way for canine meat traders to make more money. Many of the dogs that are brought to the festival are stolen from their owners, and they still wear collars. The methods in which dogs (and cats) are treated and killed are extremely cruel.
As Andrea Gung, executive director of Duo Duo Animal Welfare Project commented: “Even if this is a temporary ban, we hope this will have a domino effect, leading to the collapse of the dog meat trade.” She added, “This ban is consistent with my experience that Yulin and the rest of the country is changing for the better.”
