Argentinian artist Marta Minujín, 74 years old, has built a monumental replica of the Greek Parthenon by using 100,000 copies of banned books. As he notes, that action symbolizes the resistance to political repression.
The Parthenon of Books in Kassel, in Germany, is part of the Documenta 14 Art Festival. Students from Kassel University, helped Minujín to identify more than 170 titles which were or are still banned in various countries around the globe. That's how he constructed the full-size replica of the Parthenon by using those books, plastic sheeting, and steel.
Nevertheless, probably Germany’s most controversial book – Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler – won't figure on the Parthenon. The reason is the fact that the Nazis were notorious censors of books. Actually, Minujín’s work stands on a historical site where the Nazis burnt around 2,000 books in 1933 as part of a broad campaign of censorship.
