As the media is currently covering Hurricane Harvey, few know that an equally devastating natural disaster is occurring in South Asia.
India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Bangladesh have recently received record amounts of heavy monsoon rains. The flooding that has followed has killed approximately 1,200 people — including children. Thousands of houses have also been submerged or lost completely, while poor villages are currently left with no access to food or medicine.
The conundrum won't remedy itself, so we need to give it attention. As a result of the torrential rains, the region now faces long-term food insecurity because of the amount of farmland that has been ruined. According to the U.N.’s World Food Program's statement: ”many flood survivors have lost everything: their homes, their possessions, their crops.”
