What is the deal with most men and intelligent women?
Most men say that they'd to date a smart woman, but when given a chance to date someone of equal or higher intelligence, they punt or ditch the opportunity completely.
As one woman attests: she met someone online who seemed like a good match for her, and they met for a coffee. About forty-five minutes into their date, he looked at his watch and claimed he had to leave. He didn’t mention going out again, and she never heard from him again. Alas, this seems to be a common topic in dating right now. Men say they want to date smart women, but, according to this study, when the opportunity comes, they move their chairs further away from someone when they know she scored higher than them on an intelligence test. With all of the evidence produced and studies conducted in the past twenty years, it appears like intelligence, at least for women, is a severe liability.
So what can intelligent women do?
First of all, you should understand that studies and statistics are not reflective of all men. There are many guys out there who would be enthusiastic to date an intelligent woman, even if she was more intelligent than they are.
Also, consider that the sample size of the study was pretty small: only 105 guys were intimidated by a female with more intelligence than their own. Yes, that’s 105 men. However, think that there are 151.8 million guys only in the US. If we very conservatively say half of them are married, then that leaves 75.9 million left who are single and would appreciate a smart woman.
Of course, there are still many men who would be scared by an intelligent woman, but why would you want to date them?
If you run into a situation similar to the one described in the coffee date above, brush the guy off and move on. It’s usually easier said than done, but particularly with online dating, it’s a great idea to avoid making an emotional investment before you get to know the guy.
Finally, if you’ve got it, you should flaunt it! You don’t have to be a know-it-all, but you shouldn't hide your intelligence either. Chances are you spent a lot of your time, energy, and money to get that brilliant brain, so put your brilliance to use in every social situation. After all, it's a huge part of who you are, so people should probably know about it from the beginning.
As for those 105 men, I feel kind of sorry for them, as they clearly let their fragile ego make their decisions for them.
