Scientists have discovered no evidence for artificial signals coming from the mysterious interstellar object ‘Oumuamua. That means it is probably not an alien spaceship, unfortunately.
According to the Breakthrough Listen project, the scientists would be using the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia to examine the object for signs of alien life.
Those observations were conducted on December 13. Breakthrough Listen was designed to search for alien signals elsewhere in the universe. However, the scientists on the project turned their attention to ‘Oumuamua briefly as it's such a unique object.
The object was spotted in the Solar System in October 2017. Owing to its speed and trajectory, researchers could work out that it was possibly an asteroid from another planetary system.
Scientists in this project also wanted to examine whether there was a chance the object was artificial in nature.
As Avi Loeb from Harvard University, one of the scientists on the project, told IFLScience:
“Overall, it’s a very peculiar object indeed, which made me wonder – could it be an artificially produced interstellar probe?”

In the study, the telescope was used to search for any signals coming from that object. About ninety terabytes of raw data were gathered over 2 hours of observations.
No evidence of artificial signals has been discovered so far. Nevertheless, the team noted that monitoring and analysis would continue since all the data hadn't been looked through yet.
Andrew Siemion, director of Berkeley SETI Research Center, said in a statement:
“It is great to see data pouring in from observations of this novel and interesting source. Our team is excited to see what additional observations and analyses will reveal.”
‘Oumuamua is now making its way out of the Solar System. It’s hoped that we may discover more interstellar objects like that in the future though, giving us a greater opportunity to study them.
There are many unanswered questions at the moment, such as the origin of the object itself. It is quite odd in that it's very elongated, about ten times longer at 400 meters (1,300 feet) than it's wide. One theory suggests it might be the shard of a broken planet. For now, however, it's not aliens.
