It sounds crazy, but they are there.
It is called the Coffer Illusion and was one of the finalists in the Best Illusion of the Year Contest in 2006. Anthony Norcia from the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research was the one who created it and named it the Coffer Illusion referring to an architectural term that's used to describe a series of sunken panels in different shapes.
The picture was recently posted on Reddit by i124nk8 and since then it has been confusing thousands of people!
The world is full of optical illusions, and things are not always what they appear. Our brain is perpetually trying to make sense of everything around us, so it takes shortcuts to rapidly process the unbelievable amount of information that's available to us at every moment.
