If you have an iPhone, then you're probably not very pleased with Apple right now, particularly in case your phone is one of the older models. Reportedly, Apple had been purposely slowing down its older iPhone models, and, of course, customers were not happy about it.
Apple claims that the slow down was an effort to extend the lifespan of the older phones as battery life decreases while phones age. On the other hand, iPhone owners see it as an attempt made by the company to force customers into buying the newer models of the phone.
Several owners of older generation iPhones claim that they all had to upgrade to newer models when their old phone significantly slowed down after they downloaded new versions of iOS.
The owners also claim they would've just replaced their batteries rather than buying whole new phones if they only knew what was allegedly going on. Therefore, Apple is now being hit with multiple lawsuits. In fact, one of these is seeking a massive $999 billion!
Now, at least eight lawsuits have been filed with different federal courts, which complained that Apple deliberately hindered their product’s performance and showed an incredible lack of transparency regarding the issue.
While a simple battery replacement would have solved the problem, Apple didn't make that information clear to its customers. Now people are claiming the tech giant tried to conceal that on purpose.
To put this into monetary terms – several people who were pleased with their perfectly functioning old iPhones could've just spent between $50 – $100 for a new battery, rather than paying the $1,000 price tag to get the new iPhone X. You can see why people are angry.
Apple recently issued the following statement on the matter:
“Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, [when they] have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components.”
“Last year, we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting during these conditions.”
“We’ve now extended that feature to iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2 and plan to add support for other products in the future. Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers.”
Nevertheless, the $999 billion lawsuit accused Apple of masking the issue in an attempt to earn more money.
It mainly focuses on the fact that Apple refused to give free battery replacements to the customers affected, and that it slowed down their older iPhones to hide the faulty batteries.
Attorney Jeffrey Fazio is handling the lawsuit. He was also behind the $53 million settlement with Apple in 2013, which was about the way the company handled iPhone warranty claims.
While it's uncertain whether or not any of these current lawsuits against Apple will be successful, you need to pay attention if you have one of the faulty iPhones. The lawsuits are class-action, meaning all owners of the affected iPhones are automatically represented.
