When hearing captivating stories about love, most of us sigh and say, “That's something that can only happen in movies,” as the majority of high declarations of love are not usually an everyday thing. The love story between Pradyumna Kumar Mahanandia and Charlotte Von Schedvin started way before they first met. In India, where Pradyumna is from, families are accustomed to visiting an astrologist every time a child is born. Pradyumna's astrologist predicted that despite tradition, the boy would marry an aristocrat from a far-away country that was born under the sign of Taurus, knew how to play the flute and possessed a significant amount of forest land.
Pradyumna had a challenging childhood as he belonged to Indian society's lowest caste, the untouchables. “I was treated worse than stray dogs and cattle.” Pradyumna says, “When I passed by a temple, people threw rocks at me.”
During his youth, Pradyumna used to draw portraits on the streets of Delhi where he met Charlotte Von Schedvin, a Swedish tourist. He remembered the prediction at once and started to ask her questions while drawing her portrait. Her Zodiac sign was Taurus, she could play the flute, and her family owned forest lands. “It all fits, you are meant to be my wife,” Pradyumna said.
After that, the couple became involved romantically. They soon got married in Pradyumna’s village according to local tradition.
However, this story wouldn’t have been so heartwarming if there was no separation. Sadly, Charlotte had to go back to Sweden. Pradyumna promised he would join her there as soon as possible.
The spouses lived separately for 16 entire months and wrote letters to each other. Pradyumna felt that he couldn’t live without his beloved wife any longer. He sold all his possessions, but he still couldn't afford an air ticket. He finally bought a used bicycle for 60 rupees. Then, he said good-bye to his family and friends, and hit the road having 200 rupees in his pocket.
His journey began on 22 January 1977. There were five whole months of traveling ahead of him. He covered 45 miles each day. By the time he reached Sweden, Pradyumna had traveled more than 6,000 miles.
“I was very tired. My legs ached, but my desire to see Charlotte pushed me forward. My art saved me; I drew portraits of people who paid with money, food or a place to sleep at night,” he remembered.
During those times, many countries did not demand visas for entrance, which made his journey easier. However, when he reached Sweden, Immigration didn't let Pradyumna into the country. Authorities did not believe his story, as they thought it was too extraordinary. Nevertheless, as soon as they called Charlotte, they found out that his story was absolutely true, and they let him pass.
They also asked Pradyumna whether it was possible for migrating poor people to do the same journey during present times. His answer was compelling: “Yes. If you want it, everything becomes possible. Of course, such a journey is more difficult now, but it is still possible. Fear and doubts are our main foes. It is them that make our life more complicated.”
Pradyumna reached Boras on 28 May 1977 and finally met Charlotte after he got separated from her for two years.
“We couldn’t talk. We just cried in each other’s embrace.”
For the sake of Charlotte, her parents forgot about the rules which did not allow nobility to marry people with dark skin. The couple married again in 1979, by Swedish laws.
Since the moment of their reunion, more than 40 years have passed. Despite this long period, Pradyumna says that he still cannot believe his happiness. He doubts whether he would've been capable of conquering Charlotte’s heart in current times when people from all around the world stay connected via the internet. However, Pradyumna never doubts one thing: “Your fate is something that you make with your own hands.”
When asked about the secret of their love, they both replied that there is no secret. The important thing is to be sincere, to understand, and to respect each other.
This true story of the power of love is a beautiful example of just how possible everything can be when two people are in love. If someone is in love and has a goal, no obstacle can deter them from their path.
