Iran's 'Morality Police' Slapped A Young Woman And Wrestled Her To The Floor Because Her Hijab Was Loose

Iranian so-called "morality police" wrestled a young woman to the floor because her hijab was loose. The shocking video report has sparked outrage all over the internet.

The footage demonstrates members of the special taskforce while tackling the young woman, who seems to be in her mid-20s, in Tehran. Under Iranian law, it's compulsory for all women to cover themselves from head to toe when in public. However, many defy those boundaries by wearing a loose hijab which shows their hair.

The video displays two young friends: one is wearing a maghnaeh (that's similar to a nun’s cowl), and the other is wearing a loose headscarf which reveals part of her hair. The second young woman is verbally cautioned; a female police officer then slaps her in the face and wrestles her to the floor. The young woman is screaming repeatedly: “Let me go, let me go.”

The video went viral within hours. Abdolreza Rahmani-Fazil, Iran’s minister of interior, ordered an inquiry, according to an official statement which mentioned that the woman had provoked the police by swearing at them when she was asked to respect the law. However, it said that the reaction of the police was also “unconventional”.

The incident emerged a few months after female protests across Iran in which women were climbing on to telecom boxes, taking off their headscarves and waving them aloft on sticks.

According to reports, the victim became so frail after she was wrestled that the squad didn't take her to the police station, instead, they arrested a couple that had intervened on their behalf.

Not every woman who wears a hijab in Iran does so under pressure. However, millions are against it being obligatory. Hijab has been an integral policy in the Islamic Republic ever since the 1979 revolution. Hassan Rouhani, Iran’s moderate president, has clarified that he is against enforcing the law so harshly. However, he claims that his powers are limited regarding the conduct of the police, that is under the influence and pressure of the unelected faction of Iran's establishment.
