Over the last 13 years, artist José Naranja has been creating pocket-sized notebooks with his visual diary. By illustrating his everyday experiences, observations, ideas, and memories, he considers his ongoing project to be “a love letter to notebooks, a flight of fancy and also a part of [him].” Each of the artist's notebook pages is packed full of his writing, illustrations, stamps, and images, all of which beautifully documents the life of a well-traveled artist.
After he discovered the 9x14cm, 192-page Moleskine notebooks in 2005, José Naranja fell in love with their compact size. Now, the self-described “notebook maker” handmakes his own, and even shares the bookbinding process on his blog, where he says: “The notebook made by yourself offers a higher level of satisfaction than any other. You add the passion and love for it, your favorite paper and details. You add a part of yourself in it.”
Naranja’s sketchbooks include from color studies and botanical illustrations to personal ponderings, stories, and even hand-drawn board games. They are an amazingly intimate view into the artist’s mind. On one page, Naranja illustrates a route map of his trip in America, and on another, he depicts characters from his favorite film, The Handmaiden. The artist describes his project as “a vault of dreams, ideas, and experiences.”
He also sells an edited compilation of his best work in his elaborate, multilingual book called The Orange Manuscript. Discover more on his website, and follow Naranja on Instagram for everyday updates from his sketchbooks.
