Being a nurse is one of the most challenging but also rewarding jobs one can have. Nurses have a lot of horrors to deal with every day. It's a job that takes a lot of courage. What happened at Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida was something many people would find hard to face. Can you imagine seeing children who've been malnourished and abused? That's exactly what happened there in March 2017.
A baby girl called Delilah was admitted to the Florida hospital in Jacksonville. After extensive amounts of examinations and testings, the doctors found out that the kid had been completely neglected and abused. Reportedly the girl was only 14-months-old. Not only did Delilah have a weak body, but she had also broken bones and had fractured her skull. According to the hospital's reports, her injuries were from “non-accidental trauma.” Whoever did that to an innocent child is a pure monster. However, for one nurse, merely one look at baby Delilah, and she knew that her life was about to be changed forever.
Jess Hamm is a nurse working in the pediatric intensive care unit. She happened to be on shift the day Delilah was brought in. Although she knew this girl had suffered horrific injuries and abuse, the nurse knew right away what she had to do. “My heart was broken. I don’t want to cry. She was so lifeless, but she still held onto my finger”, she told wfla.com. Hamm decided to take Delilah home and adopt her.
When she first saw this innocent girl, her instincts kicked in right away. She knew in her heart that she could give Delilah the life she deserved, giving her endless amounts of love and affection. So she took the following steps to go from being Delilah’s nurse to her new mother. She scheduled meetings with caseworkers at the Department of Children and Families. While filling out adoption paperwork, Hamm learned something about Delilah that shocked her. The girl was a twin, and her sister Caroline was in the hospital as well. But Jess did not even think twice about it. She decided to go ahead and adopt both of the girls, offering them a loving and healthy home, the family they both deserved.
According to Fox News, Hamm said, “They’ve been through so much. They’re completely different kids. If you had met them when I met them you’d be amazed”. Fortunately, now the twins spend their days happily, singing songs and exploring new things around them. That proves that with unconditional love, proper care, and encouragement, every child can thrive and accomplish developmental goals.
Hamm also noted that as the twins get older, one can notice their different personalities. Caroline is more social, enjoys helping other people and is extremely protective of her sister. Delilah, two years old today, is exceptionally lovable, sharing kisses with everybody she meets. Hamm’s dream of becoming a mom has come true. Watch the video below for the full heartwarming story!
