In 2017, when Dior’s pre-fall collection came out, many people started noticing that some of their clothes looked strangely familiar. The designs put the little Romanian region of Bihor in the spotlight. As it turned out, Dior’s coat bears a surprising similarity to the traditional Bihor coat. The famous fashion house is now selling this coat for a staggering sum of 30,000 euros. None of their proceeds will go to Bihor’s community, however, since Dior never credited the source that might have fuelled their inspiration.
This situation led the Romanian people to find a genius way to fight against cultural appropriation. In fact, Romanian fashion magazine, Beau Monde, has launched a campaign to set things straight. With some help of native Bihor craftsmen and designers, they've created a brand new fashion line aiming to preserve their traditions. That's how Bihor Couture was born. This project gives fashion enthusiasts the chance to buy authentic traditional Bihor clothes for a much lower price and then directly pays the local craftsmen who made the clothes.
