Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, but generally, we understand them as people who don't care about the danger, risk, and sometimes give their lives, to manage the impossible or to save one or more lives.
However, there are some lesser-known heroes, as well, that are not humans. The service and military working dogs, the pit bulls that throw themselves over their owners to protect them from an oncoming train, or the German shepherds that search day and night through rubble to discover survivors. Their loyalty truly knows no bounds.
Scroll down to read about some stories of the bravest dogs we've ever met:
Sandy the Pomeranian, ran into a burning house to save her best friend, a blind Chihuahua.
These hounds in Eastern Congo work with their handlers trying to track down and arrest poachers.
Tater Tot was only hours from being euthanized when they took him into a foster home. Less than a week later, his four-year-old “brother” stopped breathing and fell unconscious. The pit bull would not stop barking until somebody came to help.
This German shepherd search-and-rescue dog, like many others, worked tirelessly to discover survivors trapped in the rubble in the aftermath of 9/11.
As this graduate’s service dog, this six-year-old Lab was instrumental in helping her graduate. He, therefore, got to don a cap and gown too!
While out on a walk with his owner, this dog discovered and helped save another dog which had been buried alive.
Sgt. Stubby is a totally decorated war hero from World War I that saved troops from horrific mustard attacks and helped to comfort the wounded and dying, among other heroics.
This Rottweiler, a service dog, called 911 for help after his owner fell, It then even opened the door when emergency responders arrived.
Luca, trained for search-and-rescue, was pulled out of retirement to help find a missing man who suffered from Alzheimer’s.
Layka, a Belgian Malinois, suffered many gunshots while subduing an oncoming insurgent in the middle of an attack in Afghanistan. She was later awarded a medal of honor for her service.
Molly, a blind lab, alerted her family to a house fire in late 2016, saving the lives of 7 humans, 4 cats and 2 dogs.
Maggie was caught on surveillance camera while breaking out of her kennel at a boarding facility. She then curled up outside a kennel which housed two frightened puppies.
Babu the Shih Tzu, begged her owner to go outside an then pulled her in the opposite direction of the beach. It turns out that she saved her from a Tsunami
Lilly, another pit bull, was going for a walk with her owner on railroad tracks. Her owner tripped and fell while a train was rapidly approaching. Lilly threw her body over her owner to rescue her. She lost a leg in the process.
During a walk with his new guardian, this brave rescue dog discovered an injured hummingbird, but there was no way he would let it die on his watch. The dog refused to leave the bird, so he worked together with his owner to bring it back to life.
Although this female pit bull named Akasha never had puppies, this doesn't mean she didn't have a maternal instinct. Her owner saved a kitten then came back home and found Akasha nursing the little one.
Chief protected his owner from a venomous Eastern Diamondback.
This brave dog dashed into a burning building and came back out – with a little kitten!
This mom risked her life to rescue her ten-week-old puppies from a house fire in Chile, by placing them all on the fire truck and out of harm’s way.
When this five-year-old pit bull saw that two coyotes had his buddy, Kitty, by her head and tail, he bravely jumped into the fray and managed to chase the wild animals away.
Major, a service pit bull, is credited with rescuing his owner’s life. When the owner had a seizure and collapsed, the faithful, intelligent dog pulled the phone out of his pocket and dialed 911.
Paris, a boxer, is a real hero for Mother Earth. Every time she goes out for walks, she always stops to pick up plastic bottles, discarded cans, and other litter. A valuable lesson for humans!
Norbert, an emotional support dog, might be little, but he is worth his weight in gold for the kids he makes smile at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
This Golden retriever surfs with children with special needs, people with disabilities and veterans suffering from PTSD.
Stitch, born with a less than ideal cleft lip and palate, serves as an inspiration for kids that are feeling anxious about surgeries to correct their birth defects.
