The world's largest river island, Majuli, might disappear. Over the last 70 years, the island has shrunk by more than half, and there are several concerns it'll be submerged in the next twenty years. Majuli is under constant threat because of the extensive soil erosion on its banks. The reason for that is thought to be the big embankments built in towns up the Brahmaputra river in order to protect them during the monsoon season that redirect the devastating fury of the river to the islet. Since 1991, more than 35 villages have been washed away. While Indian authorities try to figure out how to save the island, its life might have even been shorter if it weren’t for one local environmental activist.
In 1979, 16-year-old Jadav Payeng had encountered a large number of snakes which had died because of excessive heat after floods had washed them onto the tree-less sandbar. That was when Jadav made it his life’s mission to save the island from erosion by planting trees daily. Working tirelessly every day, he has managed to plant 550 hectares of forest – bigger than Central Park in New York City (which is 340 hectares). Today, this forest is home to Bengal tigers, Indian rhinoceros, while even a herd of more than 100 elephants regularly visit it each year. Scroll down to learn more about this capeless hero.
