Steve Cutts is a London-based illustrator and animator. His work satirizes the excesses of the modern world. His style is inspired by 1930s and 1940s cartoons, as well as contemporary comic books and graphic novels.
Before he became a freelancer in 2012, Cutts used to work as an illustrator for the creative agency Glue Isobar in London. He worked on digital projects for companies such as Coca-Cola, Google, Sony, and Toyota.
In 2012, Cutts created his most famous film, MAN, which has environmentalist and animal rights themes. Made with Adobe Flash and After Effects, Cutts describes the film as looking at man's relationship with the natural world. His video has over 28 million views on YouTube.
Cutts won the Jury Award at Annecy International Film Festival in 2017, the highest award that's a qualifying factor to be eligible for nomination at the Academy Awards. That was for his music video “Are You Lost in the World Like Me?”
He said:
"I see a lot of insanity in the way we live, and to progress, I think we need to become more aware and look at the options we have as a society more clearly, so if I can add to the discussion surrounding that, then all the better.
The themes I choose to focus on are fundamental aspects of modern society that surround and affect all of us, so naturally, they are the subject of much of my work.
I see it as part of my role as an artist to comment on the times we live in, the things that affect us on a daily basis and the aim of my work is to get people thinking and talking more about these aspects."
