South Korean artist Young-Deok Seo uses the unusual material of bicycle chains to craft realistic sculptures of human bodies. His work features intricate details you would not expect from something as clunky as chains. However, Seo wields it like a string to create a combination which is delicate but substantial.
Fragmentation is an emphasis in the artist's chain link sculptures. The very nature of chain, with limited-mobility metal links, means that every figure will be somewhat incomplete with tiny holes that let light pass through. That's evident even in Seo’s towering, hollow masks, but it is made even more apparent in his pieces which obscure portions of the face or whole parts of the body. The works are intended to question the industrialization of labor, which has become synonymous with the contemporary world.
