How would you reply if somebody asked you to describe the 1950s? Perhaps you’d mention the Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union? Is Elvis Presley becoming more and more famous? The first satellites going into orbit? Well, you could do that. Or you could also explain how old magazines advised women to seduce men to get them to marry them. Kim Marx-Kuczynski from Madison, Wisconsin has recently shared a 1958 McCall’s article, entitled “129 Ways to Get a Husband,” demonstrating how much society has changed since then.
“In the United States today there are sixteen million women over the age of seventeen who are not married. Presumably, the vast majority of them would like to be,” the text begins.
The magazine's publisher asked 16 people to brainstorm strategies that lonely women could use to make men like them, and they delivered. From ordering rare steaks to crying in the corner of the room or getting a hunting license, some of these tips are really fascinating. In their authors’ defense, the magazine indeed asked them to throw away any judgments when writing down their ideas.
“My boyfriend, John Bascynski spotted it at a rummage sale and pointed it out. I bought it for a dollar. I think the article is reflective of the social mores of the era, and I found the comparison between what was acceptable then and what is acceptable now fascinating. It also made me grateful that so much progress has been made,” Kim said.
Kim believes that everyone who is currently considering a long-term relationship should stay away from this kind of stuff. “I think if someone is actively looking for a life-long partner just for the sake of being married, they will end up in a failed relationship whether they legally sever it or not,” she said.
“It’s outdated and absurd and funny, but it had serious intentions,” Kim added.
