However, for heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury, the answer was easy: donate it to charity, specifically to help the homeless. After he won the $9 million from a match with Deontay Wilder, he did precisely this.
As The Sun reports, Fury is no stranger to mental health issues and drug addiction. He spent most of his life battling trying to break free from the afflictions. Now, he is a heavyweight boxing champion, and he’s doing his part to help the less fortunate.
The British boxer, who is also known as “The Gypsy King” in the Ring, squared off against Wilder in December. The reward for the fight was about $3.5 million. However, the pay-per-view income brought the payout to roughly $9 million. According to British reports, Fury’s entire award was donated to several UK charities that specialize in providing housing for recovering addicts and alcoholics.
Fury hasn’t always been passionate about solving homelessness. But, a recent trip to Los Angeles changed this. The boxer was in the city for a media conference when he saw a staggering amount of people living on the streets. Knowing he could have been in the same position, Fury decided to do something.
The donation was confirmed when a fan asked Fury about the financial pledge during a Q&A segment of a charity auction. “I did give away my last purse, but I don’t do charity work for a pat on the back,” said Fury. “I do it to help people, but I do not want praise for it, I don’t want to be called a do-gooder.”
