Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, as well as Chrissy Teigen and John Legend, are both examples of couples goals. However, they're honeymooners compared to Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross: an unusual Hollywood romance that has lasted for 34 years. In an industry which sees many couples come and go, the actor and actresses’ 34-year-old marriage is a triumph. The story of how it all began is so sweet it belongs on the silver screen.
Elliott, 74, and Ross, 79, had already made a name for themselves in Hollywood before they first met back in 1978 on the set of The Legacy, a horror movie which was shot in London.
While that was the first time, they officially met, Elliott, admits that he had encountered Ross before then, almost ten years before when he had a small role in Butch Cassidy. The actor was too shy to approach her, though, he told AARP The Magazine: “I didn’t dare try to talk to her then. She was the leading lady. I was a shadow on the wall, a glorified extra in a bar scene.”
Five years older than Elliott, Ross was married to her fourth husband at the time. Elliott had never been married before. In 1979 she got a divorce and married Elliott in 1984. That same year the two had their daughter, Cleo Rose.
Finding time between projects is difficult for all actors but Elliott proved early on it was a priority. He almost passed up his breakout role as Cher’s boyfriend in the movie Mask (1985) because he was on his and Ross' honeymoon in Hawaii.
Elliott told his agent that he would not leave his vacation with Ross early to test for the role, but his supportive partner had his back. She called his agent the same night and said she would get Elliott back in time for the screen test.
The couple is still going strong after all these years. They even teamed up again onscreen in 2017 for the film The Hero, about an aging Western film star. Ross plays his ex-wife and was excited to work on what she called “a really moving story.”
