Newfoundlands are known for their massive size and large coats. However, if you take a closer look, you'll discover they are merely gentle giants. Out of large dog breeds Newfoundlands top the chart as the world's fifth largest standing at between 27-30 inches tall and weighing 150 pounds. If you add to their height the thick double coat which covers them, they seem even more significant.
The breed, as its name suggests, comes from the Canadian island of Newfoundland. Fisherman in the area needed dogs that could aid them onboard, and with their natural ability to swim because of their partially webbed feet, Newfoundlands were a logical choice. The dogs kept warm by their fur, were strong enough to rescue a grown man from drowning. That kind of loyalty has made them the perfect pets to their families, who, as you'll see from the list below, have had to make a little extra room in their houses.
