If there is one thing that Game Of Thrones probably doesn’t need, it’s more publicity. The famous television series is nearing its finale, and people cannot stop talking about it, everyone knows what it is already! Even those of us that don’t care can’t help but catch the gossip at work, on the street, or among friends.
So while HBO doesn’t have to resort to publicity stunts to create a buzz, if they're going to anyway, they might as well make it a good one. With this epic scavenger hunt to delight the traveler in all of us, you have to say they have succeeded!
Because if there is one thing we all love, it is searching for something. And nothing gets people more excited than a game of hide and seek. HBO took the concept to the extreme by scattering six iron thrones in secret locations across the world, giving tantalizing clues in hour-long, 360-degree videos of their locations. One is in a forest; another seems to be in a desert somewhere. There are also a couple in icy places, with very few landmarks around that could help to identify the area. Imagine stumbling across one, without knowing anything about the show?
So far, four thrones have been discovered; In Spain, Brazil, Sweden, and the UK. That leaves two still out there somewhere, such as one of the icy ones. Some people think it is somewhere in Canada, but my guess is Iceland.
Swedish photographer Jonathan Vitblom, from Kiruna in Northern Sweden went very far to discover one of the thrones in the Swedish wilderness. “I saw the videos on YouTube that they had put out thrones in the wild and I was extremely familiar with the surroundings of the throne placed in the North,” said Jonathan. “But I couldn’t really believe it was up here until I saw the first person who found it uploaded a picture of it, and then I was 99% sure that I knew exactly where it was.”
“So we packed our equipment, outfits that are appropriate for winter in the north of Sweden and then we jumped into the car and had a 1-hour car drive till we reached the location. When we got up there, I wanted to make sure that the throne really was there so I took my drone and flew up to the plateau that I thought it was located at. I spotted it almost right away because you could tell that a big throne doesn’t belong up there on the mountainside!”
Here is Jonathan’s picture, captured between Björkliden and Riksgränsen in the far north of Sweden. To finally get to the throne, they needed a long hike through heavy and deep snow, though they were in for a surprise when they arrived at the location. “When we got there we were surprised by a camera team that wanted pictures and an interview with us!”
