To most of us, summer brings joy, relaxed moments, and our long awaited holidays. However, that’s not the case for most pets in France since for some of them, summer means stepping out of their home’s comfort and beginning a tough street life. Every year during the summer, about 100,000 pets are suddenly unwanted and abandoned in France. Let’s admit this number is pretty scary, considering that it’s only for the summer alone!
They’re abandoned because people can’t find a kennel, a pet-sitter, or take them along, and so they decide to abandon their pets instead of missing out on their holidays. The sad truth is that not all those pets are handed over to a shelter by their owners, and that is how they end up dumped on the streets. Some of them are even euthanized.
All of that happens because we live in a consumer society, so a pet is frequently considered as an impulse buy. People buy a pet for their kids as a Christmas present, and if they become a minor obstacle in planning their holidays, they do not hesitate to abandon them. However, they sometimes forget that a pet is not a toy but a living and loving creature!
Many awareness-raising operations have been put in place to open our eyes to this terrible injustice, though, one project stands out of the crowd. The project is named “Summer Adventures” and it’s an amateur work by artistic director Nicolas Amiard. The idea of the project is to reflect on this urgent situation and raise awareness of abandonment.
The series includes classic comics from our childhood: from Scooby-Doo to Asterix and Pokemon, the Simpsons and Tintin, they all show how the characters from our childhood would feel if they were left out and abandoned on summer holidays. Who else could touch our heart more than our childhood comics, after all?
