On a beach in Port Aransas in Texas, a sculpture of Abraham Lincoln represents him seated in anguish. With his head buried in his hand, he is sitting atop a crumbling monument. The scene is as poignant as it’s awe-inspiring because Lincoln and his throne are crafted entirely out of sand. Damon Langlois is the artist behind the sand sculpture and its beautiful details which include the likeness of the 16th President and deep “cracks” in the seat base. This piece, titled Liberty Crumbling, has recently won first place in the 23rd annual Texas SandFest, the greatest native sand sculpture competition in the United States.
There is no denying that Langlois’ reimagining of the Lincoln Memorial does not comment on the current state of domestic and international affairs. He doesn’t intend for it, though, to have a particular political leaning.
The road to creating Liberty Crumbling was a long one. It began approximately 30 years ago when Langlois joined a competitive sand sculpture team named the SandBoxers; he considers it the official beginning of his sand sculpting journey.
