People Share Terrifying Pictures Of Sao Paulo Having Gone Pitch Black During Daytime From Amazon Fires

Imagine waking up in midday only to realize it’s still the middle of the night. Only it isn’t; it’s actually the sky that is covered with such a thick layer of black smoke, hardly any sun rays can get through. Now, this may sound like some apocalyptic scenario, but that is the chilling reality the residents of São Paulo, Brazil, experienced.

On August 19th, 2019, Brazil’s most populous city plunged into darkness while thick black clouds from the raging Amazon forest fires crept over the busy metropolis.

According to meteorologist Franco Nadal Villela, the darkening was caused by a cold front from the east of São Paulo meeting with the fine dust brought in from the fires in Mato Grosso do Sul.
