The world is finally becoming aware of the problems related to single-use plastic straws. More and more corporations are currently evolving by taking out that menace from their stores. A Philippines cafe in particular transformed from single-use plastic straws to biodegradable straws. Even governments, like England’s, is trying to phase out plastic straws. People are currently trying to fight plastic pollution as much as they can. However, they’re trying to lower the blow to customer satisfaction as well with proper alternatives.
This time, Starbucks, the popular coffee chain, is bringing in their guns – phasing out single-use plastic straws. They also have a proper alternative for it – a strawless cold-cup lid that looks like a sippy cup but for adults. Starbucks has been planning to eliminate plastic straws for a long time; they have strategies to do so internationally by 2020. Now many Starbucks stores across Canada and the US have initiated the process of throwing away their plastic straws.
Well, you may be asking – isn’t this new replacement also plastic? Well, yes – but the key term here is single-use. The lid is made of polypropylene, a substance that can make the lid reusable. It’s sustainable and hence, a definite evolution from single-use plastic straws.
Moreover, according to Starbucks, the strawless lids will be the standard for tea, espresso beverages, as well as iced coffee. Compostable plastic straws or paper straws will be given with Frappuccino beverages. Alternative materials of straw are now available in many stores.
You can also bring your favorite eco-friendly reusable straws as well.
