Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has recently testified before Congress urging them to take action.
Thunberg told the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis “I want you to listen to the scientists. I want you to unite behind science. And then I want you to take action.”
Thunberg cited a 2018 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The document warned about the potential impact of global warming of 1.5°C, which researchers say is likely to happen between 2030 and 2052 unless action is taken.
“This is not political views or my opinions,” said Thunberg. “This is science.”
Thunberg bluntly addressed members of the Senate Climate Change Task Force saying “Please save your praise. We don’t want it,” she added, “Don’t invite us here to tell us how inspiring we are without doing anything about it because it doesn’t lead to anything.”
Just 16, @GretaThunberg is already one of our planet’s greatest advocates. Recognizing that her generation will bear the brunt of climate change, she’s unafraid to push for real action. 17-year-old climate activist Jamie Margolin also had harsh words for the committee.
“You’re promising me lies,” said Margolin. “Everyone who will walk up to me after this testimony saying I have such a bright future ahead of me will be lying to my face. It doesn’t matter how talented we are, how much work we put in, how many dreams we have. The reality is, my generation has been committed to a planet that is collapsing.”
