It is not easy to raise a kid, especially when both parents need to work. And even though you might always hire a babysitter, nothing compares to the love and care a grandparent can give to a kid. A study conducted at Oxford University and the Institute of Education also agrees that when it comes to childcare, it’s best to count on grandparents.
Research shows that grandchildren grow happier and more secure with their grandparents by their side.
Grandparents are known for their loving and caring nature towards their grandkids. It’s no wonder why they are children’s favorite people. They don’t only make the best meal in town, but also give the best kind of emotional support.
Of course, it’s no secret that grandparents “spoil” their grandchildren. This might scare some parents to leave children in their hands. However, academics at Oxford University found how beneficial it is for kids to have a close relationship with their grandparents.
In a study that involved over 1,500 kids, it was discovered that grandparents could help kids go through a crisis. The emotional support grandparents give to kids is vital, especially when the family goes through tough times like a divorce.
In a case involving a 12-year-old girl, her grandma proved to be a great help when she was having a problem at school. The girl shared in the study how she could manage emotional distress with her grandmother’s help. Her grandma was her comfort when the girl was bullied at school.
The research also shows that grandparents can help hone kids’ problem-solving skills. They also offer counsel to their grandkids about their plans in the future. That was the case of one teenager involved in the study, who discussed with his grandparents discussed what universities he should apply to and what career to take.
In spite of the positive effects of having an involved grandparent in the life of kids, it turned out that just one out of three grandparents regularly takes care of their grandchild. While 40% of grandparents only lend their hands occasionally. Researchers believe that it’s time for the government to help recognize and advocate for the vital role grandparents play in the children’s well-being.
The researches don’t say that grandparents should replace actual parents in raising children. However, it stresses how great things can be achieved when all members of the family share a strong bond.
What makes a strong bond between grandparents and grandkids even more fascinating is how they both benefit from it. Studies also show that grandparents who take care of their grandchildren live longer. That’s another reason why grandparents should be a part of their precious grandkids’ lives!
