Like many other couples, Anjali Chakra and Sundas Malik recently celebrated their first anniversary. Unlike many betrothed, however, their love has gone viral. Malik is a Muslim woman, an artist from Pakistan, and Chakra is a Hindu woman from India. They both live in New York City. The two ladies posed together in a stunning photoshoot by Sarowar Ahmed that proves the power of love.
In the pictures, Malik and Chakra pose in traditional gowns in Midtown Manhattan. And, under the lights of the Bryant Park ferris wheel, the two share a kiss. Their love is sweet and not at all unusual on the streets of New York. But, as Malik points out, this isn’t the case everywhere on the planet; their same-sex relationship offers hope to those who cannot live as open and as free.
Many people are praising the photo series as larger symbols of same-sex love, which transcends borders and brings together divided nations. Having been raised in a “predominantly conservative Sunni household,” Malik did not have that many Hindu friends. She was understandably nervous about attending her first puja, a Hindu prayer ritual that worships one or more deities.
Happy anniversary to the girl who taught me how to love & be loved ❤️ pic.twitter.com/zm5sAhqIxP
