A Kentucky teacher restored faith in humanity when he did the impossible to make sure that one of his students would not miss the school trip because of her disabilities.
Teachers are not there only to teach us school lessons. They are supposed to teach us life lessons as well and, most importantly, to support us and empathize with us. A teacher who only likes to tick the boxes and does not really care for their student is not a good teacher at all. And this teacher from Kentucky knows that well.
Ryan is a ten-year-old girl, suffering from Spina Bifida, a condition which affects the spine and usually develops at birth. As a result, Ryan has to reckon on a wheelchair for the rest of her life. That makes the idea of going on a field trip almost absurd.
When her mom, Shelly King, learned they were planning a trip to the Falls of the Ohio State Park, she knew her kid would possibly feel left out.
Ryan had to come up with an alternative plan for that day. But the teacher Jim Freeman reached out and told her that he would take care of her daughter during the whole trip.
The teacher offered to carry the girl on his back so that she can explore the falls alongside her classmates. Thanks to the amazing schoolteacher, the little girl did not feel neglected. Shelly said this selfless gesture meant a lot to her family. She's genuinely grateful for the compassion and empathy he whole school shares.
In an interview, Freeman said that this was his way to help the little girl out.
He added that this was the least he could do, having in mind all the obstacles she has to go through daily. The teacher’s noble act is proof that we do not need a classroom to have a lesson in kindness. Their inspirational story went viral, and Ryan is now receiving love from all over the world.
