We have all been there before. You can imagine the scenario. You are standing at the check-in desk at the airport, waiting to get past all the formalities so you can get on the plane, when the person helping you check-in tells you that your luggage weights a couple of pounds over the weight limit. And you thought they would let it just pass when you were packing, but it was not your day. Begging won't help and you don't have another bag to put some clothes into. So what do you do to avoid paying? Well, if you are anything like Gel Rodriguez, you can become creative.
Gel was ready to take a flight from the Phillippines, where she was informed by the person checking her in that her carry-on luggage exceeded the weight limit. While the limit for carry-on luggage was 15 pounds, hers weighed almost 20 pounds. Therefore, Gel did what any reasonable passenger would. She wore over five pounds of clothes to escape the unreasonable extra weight fee.
She left her suitcase more than five pounds lighter after layering herself with multiple layers of jackets, t-shirts, and pants. To honor the inventive idea, Gel took a picture of the iconic moment and upload it to Facebook. Her post has since received more than 33,000 reactions, been commented on more than 1,000 times, and been shared more than 20,000 times.
However, Gel claimed she wouldn't recommend the idea to others. When asked if she'd do it again under similar circumstances, she responded, "Maybe not. It was really hot. I don't recommend other people do it." That's probably in other passengers' best interests. In 2015, James McElvar from the Scottish boy band Rewind, lost consciousness trying to pull off the same trick. Some thought he had suffered a heart attack, but in actuality, he'd passed out due to heat exhaustion. So if you were planning to try thay, we'd suggest you pack with more caution instead. Always better safe than sorry, folks!
