A hunter from Arkansas has wound up dead after the deer that he shot got back up and attacked him.
The 66-year-old man was reportedly killed while hunting in Yellville, Arkansas, according to officials.
Thomas Alexander, the now-deceased hunter, shot the buck using a muzzleloader before approaching it.
After the attack, Alexander, that was alone at the time, called his wife and was transported to the hospital sometime after 8 pm. While he was being transported to a helicopter, which was taking him to a hospital, he stopped breathing. Then, he was driven to the hospital by ambulance instead.
Upon his arrival at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home, Alexander was pronounced dead. However, details about the man's exact cause of death haven't been released. While hospital officials have reported he did have puncture wounds, he may have ultimately died from a heart attack or other complications. As a spokesperson stated, it's unlikely that autopsy will be performed to determine the man's exact cause of death.
As reported by the Quality Deer Management Association, hunters shot approximately 2.9 million antlered bucks and more than 2.8 million antlerless deer during 2017 2018. Though hunting injuries and deaths occur annually, statistics on how many hunters are killed by the deer and other game being hunted are not widely available. Most deaths linked to hunting include falls from tree stands, firearm incidents, and heart attacks.
It turns out, you're more likely to be killed by a deer than by sharks, bears, and alligators combined, according to Vox. In the end, though, the odds of an animal killing you are one in around 1.4 million.
Stephens added that the sole other time something similar happened to a hunter was in Ashley County, Arkansas.
