According to ΤΜΖ, the basketball player was traveling with at least three other people, including his 13-year-old daughter, Yanna, in his private helicopter.

The helicopter suddenly went down, as a fire broke out. Emergency personnel responded, but nobody on board survived. Five people are confirmed dead. His wife, 37-year-old Vanessa Bryant, was not among those on board.

According to The Daily Mail, a flight plan indicated that the helicopter took off from John Wayne Airport in Orange County at 9.06am PST and the last signal was received from the aircraft at 9.45am:
Bryant played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the Los Angeles Lakers for his entire 20-year career. At 34 years, Bryant was the youngest player in league history to have reached 30,000 career points.
It is with great sadness that we learn of the death of Kobe Bryant and four others in a helicopter crash in Calabasas. The aircraft went down in a remote field off Las Virgenes around 10:00 this morning. Nobody on the ground was hurt. The FAA and NTSB are investigating.
