Domestic abuse is a massive worldwide issue that needs to be addressed instead of ignored. It often leads to femicides: the term describes the intentional murders of women that can also be defined as hate-based sex crimes.
According to Wikipedia, three out of ten women have been abused by their male partners at least once in their lives, while 13.5 percent of homicides are actually gendered, which means that they are sex-based hate crimes against women.
Turkish artist Yanköşe decided to tackle this issue and raise awareness by commemorating the female victims of domestic abuse in 2018. The photos below depict 440 pairs of shoes that belonged to the 440 women who were killed by their own husbands in 2018.
Shockingly, approximately 40% of Turkish women have suffered from domestic abuse. Some were even killed. Art is one of the many ways in which we can openly speak about femicides.
Interestingly, along with aesthetical reasons, the artist used high-heels to symbolize women's independence: they are employed, they make their own money and, therefore, they don't need a man to take care of them.
