A 19-year-old sex trafficking victim is facing life in prison for killing the pedophile who sexually abused her since she was 16. Chrystul Kizer was one of the at least a dozen underage victims that were abused and filmed by a man named Randy Volar without their consent. The videos were found by police four months before Volar was killed.
The pedophile was arrested in early 2018 on charges of child enticement, second-degree child sexual assault, and using a computational device to manage a child sex crime. Police recovered image and video evidence of him abusing many underage girls, including Kizer. Yet, for some unknown reason, the man was released the very next day without bail, which allowed him to continue his abuse.
Several months later, on June 5, 2018, Kizer shot Volar twice in the head, set his body on fire, and left the scene in his BMW. She was later found by police in Milwaukee and linked to the murder through the vehicle. She confessed after giving officers multiple explanations of her innocence.
District Attorney Michael Graveley that failed to bring Volar to justice for his crimes against children, charged Kizer with the first-degree murder and potentially carrying a life sentence, arguing that the killing was premeditated. The attorney's office has even attempted to hide the evidence of sexual abuse from the defense, claiming that it wasn't relevant to the case.
Kizer said that Volar drugged her on the night of the incident and that he was trying to rape her when she shot him in self-defense. A judge ruled that she wouldn't be able to use an "affirmative defense" law that allows sex trafficking victims to claim self-defense in situations like that.
According to the Washington Post, Kizar and Volar met online through an escorting website and started a supposedly "consensual" relationship, despite the fact that Kizer was only 16. At first, Volar was giving her expensive gifts as well as money to take home to her family.
Nevertheless, he became more controlling of her and eventually started taking over her life and finances, positioning himself as her pimp.
When the girl attempted to distance herself from Volar, he became more aggressive.
A month before his shooting, another man with whom Kizer was involved, Delane Nelson, gave her a handgun to protect herself if Volar decided to follow through on his threats.
However, on the week of the shooting, Kizer became distrustful of Nelson. Having nowhere else to go, she ended up back at Volar's house. She said that at some point during her visit, she realized that she was drugged, and Volar started touching her. She doesn't remember many details about what happened next; she vaguely remembers the gun going off. She also said she doesn't remember starting the fire.
After searching his house, the police found computers with a large number of child exploitation footage in which Volar can be seen having sex with girls as young as 12.
Investigators also found a bank account with $1.5 million in transfers, which is likely tied to his trafficking and child pornography activities.
