A visually impaired engineer named Kursat Ceylan invented the WeWALK smart cane that guides blind people. Ceylan is the CEO and co-founder of the non-profit called the Young Guru Academy (YGA) that made WeWALK come to life.
As a person who faces the daily challenges of being blind, Ceylan knew the limitations of the existing technology people like him have to make do of. Knowing that he created the WeWALK, hoping to change the lives of the visually impaired.
This innovative cane includes built-in speakers, voice assistance, Google Maps, a Bluetooth system that enables syncing to other devices, and high-end sensors that alerts the user through vibrations in case of above chest level obstacles—something a regular cane can't provide.
One of Ceylan's goals in making the WeWALK is to make the social participation of people like him full and more comfortable.
This device isn't entirely new, but the fact that he was able to utilize and incorporate existing technologies such as voice assistance, Google Maps, and Bluetooth synchronization makes it a completely new idea. Many people have expressed their joy and excitement for having this kind of device available for the visually impaired.
As the World Health Organization reports, an estimated number of about 36 million are blind. Just imagine the possible change and impact of the WeWALK in these people's lives once they get their hands on this groundbreaking device!
