The Gates Foundation has announced a donation of up to one hundred million dollars to improve the detection and treatment of the international pandemic of coronavirus. The money will also help create new facilities for the isolation of patients who have been diagnosed with the virus until their treatment is successfully completed. Part of the donation will also be dedicated to scientific research in the development of a vaccine against the deadly virus.
Coronavirus is a highly infectious disease that causes respiratory problems, and if left untreated, it can lead to pneumonia and death. The 2019 ongoing global outbreak of the virus has contaminated 194,217 individuals worldwide to date, of which 7,864 people have died, and 80,840 people have officially recovered.
In a press release made by the gatesfoundation.org, CEO Mark Suzman said, ''Multilateral organizations, national governments, the private sector, and philanthropies must work together to slow the pace of the outbreak, help countries protect their most vulnerable citizens and accelerate the development of the tools to bring this epidemic under control''.
The aim is to raise an international scientific response that will capitalize on the resources provided by the foundation's donation and help ''build on the steps that the World Health Organization has taken to date", Suzman explains.
