All of us use paper for writing and drawing, but when it comes to constructing, most would think that paper has limited functions when used as the main material. This, however, is far from true for British artist Pippa Dyrlaga, who has been using simple repro paper as her primary medium for artistic expression. Pippa lives in Yorkshire, England, and has been working on paper-cutting and print-making for over ten years.
After drawing a soft outline on repro paper, Pippa then works on the drawing in parts to gradually increase the details using just a precision knife. Note that the artist works on her cut-out drawings in reverse so that the final result is visible on the side of the paper that is smoother.
Her source of inspiration has been the nature and folk culture that is associated with the English countryside, two apparent features in her pieces. Combining elements of reality and fantasy, the most common themes that her work explores include animals and plants that display an extraordinary amount of detail and depth.
For the artist, the stage of production, which requires many hours and patience on her part, is equal to and as valuable as the completed works themselves.
