Co-founder of the Alibaba Group, Jack Ma donates two million protective masks to be distributed in Europe with the first batch of masks delivered in Belgium last Friday and the second batch to be delivered in Italy.
A freight carrying 500,000 masks and test kits arrived at the Liege Airport in Belgium. A statement made by the Alibaba Foundation and the Jack Ma Foundation, together with officials from the Liege Airport, announced that the shipment would also be delivered to Italy. More cargo is scheduled to arrive the following days at the airport, which is set to become the Alibaba Group's main European hub for e-commerce shipments. Ma has announced the donation of 500,000 coronavirus testing kits and another million masks to be distributed across the US.
This is the third time Jack Ma has offered to help fight the novel coronavirus pandemic. At the end of January, Ma announced the donation of 100 million yuan (roughly $14.5 million) to assist in the development of a vaccine that protects against the coronavirus. At a later point, Ma also gave away a further $12.5 million to the Peter Doroty Institution for Infection and Immunity in Australia, again to assist in the development of a coronavirus vaccine.
Jack Ma co-founded the Alibaba Group in 1999, which has since grown into a $420 billion corporation. His net worth is estimated at $37 billion.
