This remarkable mother-daughter duo paid tribute to all historically significant black female figures as part of celebrating Black History Month back in February 2017. Lola, a 5-year-old girl, with the help of her mother, Cristi Smith-Jones, dress up as 28 iconic black women from history. The purpose of Black History Month is to raise awareness about the achievements of extraordinary people of African heritage.
Smith-Jones told CNN that her daughter's love of history started with the discovery of Martin Luther King Jr. Day when Lola learned about his story at school. So her parents thought it was an excellent opportunity to talk to her about slavery and the civil rights movement.
"She seemed to understand where we were coming from," Smith-Jones said.
Lola's family figured that dressing up would be a fun way of educating her on such a heavy topic.
"Since it's a heavy topic, we wanted to find a way to make learning about black history fun for her," Cristi Smith-Jones said.
So, Lola's mother, Cristi, chose some influential black women from history and told their stories to her daughter. Lola saw pictures of the women whose stories she was taught and had to pick out who she wanted to dress up as.
Then, the family searched through their house to recreate an iconic woman for each day of Black History Month.
Cristi explains that Lola is "by nature very quiet and serious in school," has come to identify with the women she has studied. "Her ability to emulate them is uncanny."
Cristi also stated that Dr. Jemison "taught (Lola) that she can be anything she wants and that you can change your mind -- you don't have to be the same thing forever."
