An elderly Italian couple proves that true love can overcome every obstacle and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in intensive care, as both of them are coronavirus patients.
The story of an elderly couple from Italy, is popular on the internet, as they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the hospital, as they are both suffering from coronavirus.
Sandra 71 and Giancarlo 73 did not separate even during the pandemic, as they both fell ill and are being treated at the same hospital. In a heart-warming moment, the lovebirds were holding hands across their beds with ventilators over their faces.
Reanimation nurse Roberta Ferretti found out about the couple's 50th anniversary and decided to help them celebrate, even hospitalized in intensive care. Alongside with other colleagues of her, they did their best to allow Sandra and Giancarlo to mark their special occasion.
Roberta informed local media:
“Sandra cried a lot, not for herself; she was worried about her husband. He told me how much he still loved her after so many years. When I found out that it was their anniversary, I thought they had to celebrate it.”
Ferretti described the golden wedding anniversary they organized at the hospital:
“We put the 50 candles on a small cake because you cannot light it near oxygen, we played the Wedding March, they had their beds together, and they held hands, with the little strength they still have. It was an amazing moment, very beautiful. Those minutes alone pay us for all the sacrifices we have made these days. He kept repeating how much he loves her. We broke into tears. In the air, you could feel the love you chase your whole life.”
The head of the intensive care unit, Lusisanna Cola, shared:
“Αll I do is encourage my colleagues to try to get to know the person behind the patient better and use their identity and their history as support for their recovery. Sometimes, a miracle happens, like in this case.”
The medical staff shared the pictures of the heart-melting celebration of love that conquers everything, even the fear of death, with the children of the couple, Gianluca and Andrea.
From their side, they were thankful to the nurses and doctors, who while fighting against novel coronavirus under adverse conditions, they offered their parents the chance to celebrate their love.
“Our parents are made for each other. They are one of those old-fashioned couples who no longer exist.”
In even more good news, the couple is released from an intensive care unit, and the medical staff believes that they will be discharged together soon.
The nurse shares that she hopes people keep following the stay-at-home measurements.
Till today April 15, there are 165,155 coronavirus cases in Italy, with 21,645 deaths.
