Economically and socially speaking, the current state of affairs in the world is not particularly promising. It is not unknown that, in developed countries, especially the USA, economic and social inequality is on the rise, with an increasing number of people finding themselves homeless and abandoned by the state. The extent of the problem is apparent in the numbers, with over half a million people officially living on the streets. Even more apparent, the problem of homelessness prevails in the state of California, where the total number of unsheltered people reached 151,278 the past year.

Thankfully, people are still fighting for a positive contribution to the lives of people that are most in need. A shining example can be seen in the case of Dr. Stewart Kwane, a veterinarian who has been voluntarily treating the pets of homeless people in California for almost ten years.

Soon after the 2007 recession began in the US, Dr. Kwane decided to help those who were hit the hardest. In a report made by San Diego TV Station Fox5, he reveals:

“There was something about it that I loved,”

To be able to help, Stewart Kwane, 49, has to cover the cost of basic food and medicines on his own. He has launched a GoFundMe page with the goal to raise as much as possible to pay towards the expensive surgeries that his pet patients require.

“The cost of minor treatments like ear infections, flea treatment, or vaccines can be around $100, whereas more serious cases like a tumor removal or dental with extractions can be $1,500.” he says.

So in order to save just one life, Stewart has to be able to spend quite a lot of money. The high cost required for surgeries can get things complicated, as was the case of owner Walter and his companion Dinker, “who have a connection like no other.” But, “Dinker has a very rare condition that requires surgery from a specialist.”

So far, Stewart has raised over $100,000 from donations, which has enabled him to help more animals and his goal now is to build a vast network of street vets to operate around the country. Show your support towards Dr. Kwane's remarkable work by donating here.
