A new artwork by Banksy was spotted at Southampton General Hospital. The black and white drawing occupies a surface of 1 square meter and was displayed in a foyer close to the emergency department upon the hospital managers' agreement.
The artwork features a young boy in dungarees kneeling by a wastepaper basket. The basket contains the boy's thrown away Spiderman and Batman figurine models while the boy plays with his new action hero, an NHS nurse who he holds in the air.
The nurse model is depicted with her arm outstretched and pointing forwards in the same manner as Superman on a mission. She is also wearing a protective mask, a nurse's apron with the Red Cross on -drawn in red, the only colour apparent in the drawing. She additionally wears the classic hero's cape.
Banksy left a note to the hospital workers, where he wrote: "Thanks for all you're doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if its only black and white."
It has been agreed that the drawing will stay at the Southampton General Hospital until fall, when it be auctioned with the money donated to support the NHS.
In a report from the BBC, Paula Head, CEO of the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust said: "Our hospital family has been directly impacted with the tragic loss of much loved and respected members of staff and friends."
"The fact that Banksy has chosen us to recognise the outstanding contribution everyone in and with the NHS is making, in unprecedented times, is a huge honour." she added.
