Many of us now know for the first time what it is like to have to work from home, but Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has told his employees that they might never have to come back, unless they want to.
That’s right! Dorsey is suggesting that the coronavirus work from home position that Twitter has taken could be extended indefinitely thereby allowing employees to become full-time stay at home workers.
A Twitter spokesperson speaking to NBC news regarding the potential new company position said:
“We were uniquely positioned to respond quickly and allow folks to work from home given our emphasis on decentralization and supporting a distributed workforce capable of working from anywhere … The past few months have proven we can make that work. So if our employees are in a role and situation that enables them to work from home and they want to continue to do so forever, we will make that happen. If not, our offices will be their warm and welcoming selves, with some additional precautions, when we feel it’s safe to return”.
They also stated that Twitter had stopped all in-person meetings and events for the rest of 2020 and that offices certainly wouldn’t be opening for a good few months at least.
CEO Dorsey has become well known for having unique takes on the business world, and on tackling issues facing society. Twitter for instance has banned some political advertising, which was linked to the ‘fake-news’ scandal, but will still run party political ads during the 2020 US presidential election. He has also stated that he will make huge donations to charity. These donations from Dorsey will include $1 billion to the coronavirus relief effort, roughly a quarter of his overall wealth.
While other tech companies have employees currently working at home, both Facebook and Google expect staff to begin returning to work, in small numbers, from the summer months onwards – although Facebook does say attendance will not be mandatory for any staff. However, it is just possible that the work from home lifestyle will be taken up by other businesses big and small – particularly if they see that productivity isn’t falling.
Perhaps this crisis will really lead to a huge change in our working habits, saving us all that stressful commute. We will need to see how Twitter and other businesses fare in the coming months. We only hope that, at the very least, those businesses keep all employees as safe as possible.
