You have probably heard the expression ‘you are what you eat’, and that holds some truth. But what is more true is that ‘you are what you think’. In effect this means that what you think about most of the time, and the attitude towards life you develop, will strongly determine your outcomes in life.
Many of us are too self-critical, or too self-conscious, and fail to reach our true potential for no other reason than negative thinking habits. Therefore, in order to change your life you have to start thinking positively.
Here are 4 techniques to help you think positively and build the life you deserve.
Find the positive in every situation
Life will have failures, this is inevitable. What most people don’t realise though is the more successful you eventually become, or the bigger goals you have for yourself, the more failures you will have and the more mistakes you will make. If we are playing life very safe and only striving to obtain an ‘ok’ existence then making mistakes and having failures is more rare simply because we are dealing with lower odds and fewer obstacles. Those that come out on top in life accept failures and mistakes and get up and go again. They take onboard what they have learned in the process of making mistakes. Then eventually, sometimes after many attempts, a truly brilliant accomplishment is generated.
Think positively about your mistakes and understand they are the inevitable consequence of ambition.
Accept your weaknesses
No one is born a superman with the ability to excel in all fields. In fact those that excel in one field are rare enough, never mind being someone who excels in several. To be good at something requires practice and dedication, think of any successful person, all of them were not good at something to begin with.
It is for this reason you must accept your weaknesses as simply being the fact that you have not yet practiced or dedicated enough time to a goal or skill set. Also, many of us simply don’t have an in built talent for certain things – therefore we have to spend time exploring what it is we can become really great at. If we don’t accept our weaknesses we will simply be stuck in a rut.
Accept the requirement for time
Too many people these days want instant results. This doesn’t exist, only in fantasy or in Hollywood. True accomplishment takes years of working towards something, it can’t emerge overnight. In fact by thinking you can achieve things very quickly what often happens is that people become disheartened and then fail to maintain habits that would actually make them successful in the long-run.
If you want something a positive mind set focused on consistency is key. A few hours a day on any task over the course of a year is far more effective than cramming 50 hours into a few weeks and then giving up.
Be grateful
Understanding all the great things you already have in your life is crucial to improving your life further. The positive mind technique of noting all the things we have, and we are grateful for, whether it be health, family or past success is an amazing invigorator. Some people think that if we beat ourselves up and get down on ourselves then it will motivate us to fight harder, but this isn’t the case. Doing these things puts us into a negative mood, and a negative mood leads to apathy, laziness and depression. Be grateful for all those wonderful things you already have and this will boost your mood, attitude and ambition.
Try to apply these techniques over the next month. Each morning think about these four simple points and we can guarantee that you will start to improve in whatever aspect of life you wish.
