Friendships are one of the most important things in life. But these don’t just happen magically, and they don’t just keep themselves healthy without a little effort. Here are 8 ways in which you can build and maintain a really strong friendship.


1. Take an interest in what is happening in their lives

You should be interested in your friend’s lives. You may not realise it but many people are only interested in the ‘friendship’ because it fills their time and gives them companionship. If you really want a truly good friendship, you actually have to care about the day-to-day lives and struggles of your friends.


Ask yourself, what is happening in your friend’s life and how can you support them or share in their joy?


2. Remember the good times

If this is an old friendship, think back on all the things you have done together and the experiences you have shared. In doing so, it really helps cement the foundation of your friendship and your shared journey.


3. Reach out to them

Sometimes the busyness of life gets on top of us and we may not hear from friends for some time. Don’t think they have to reach out to you first or that they are avoiding you, give them a call, ask them how they are, and if you can arrange a meet-up in the future. Many friendships die simply through lack of someone making the first move.


4. Don’t hold grudges

While we shouldn’t allow anyone into our lives that treats us badly, in any long friendship, there will be disagreements. Holding these as grudges will kill off the friendships going forward. 7. Actually, do things together

Friendships can become stale and boring if you are doing the same tasks over and over, like watching tv together or going to a bar. Instead, take up a new exciting activity you can do together. This will give you much more to talk about and kill off any boredom.


8. Don’t take a friendship for granted

Too often, the things that are most important to us are taken for granted. Cherish your friendship and never presume a person will always be there for you, especially if you are not always there for them. This way, you will really appreciate the relationship you have and make the moves to properly maintain it.
