If you go down to the woods today, you are sure of a big surprise! That was certainly the case for one group of tourists hiking at Chipinque Ecological Park in San Pedro Garza García in Mexico when they were approached by a black bear.
The incident caught on camera, showed the group walking along the trail and a black bear approaching them. It then begins sniffing one of the hikers and standing up on two legs to get a good sniff of her hair. That would be a crazy story in and of itself. However, what happened next was even more amazing, or should we say scary. The girl, who at first appears totally undaunted by the approaching bear being so close to her and paying her so much attention, uses her phone to snap a selfie with the bear.
Thankfully, the bear, despite at one point pawing at her legs, decides it is time to move along and heads off on his merry way. One onlooker who can be heard to be quite worried by the incident is heard saying 'no', which appears to be him attempting to warn the girl not to take the picture, possibly fearing that the flash would enrage or upset the bear.
This girl has nerves of steel.

She actually took a selfie with the big guy... pic.twitter.com/I3Ezyn8q7G
It was just one day earlier, that the park had put out a warning on twitter as to what to do if you see a bear. They suggest keeping your distance, standing still and not taking pictures.
The video of the incident was posted on twitter and soon went viral across social media, with many major news networks picking up on it. While some would call the girl irresponsible, the truth is that she didn't attempt to run away from the bear and kept very still, nor did she really engage with it, and while she did take a photograph, this was merely a small movement of the arms. Perhaps she realised that she would never be in that situation again!
While black bears are relatively small compared to their grizzly cousins, they still pose a danger and their bites could be severely dangerous. Bear attacks though are extremely uncommon and most danger occurs when a mother is with cubs and feels threatened.
While we certainly don't condone the actions of the girl, we sure imagine that this is probably the holiday snap she will be posting first!
